High-Purity Quartz Advances in 300 mm Semiconductor Manufacturing Supply Chains

High-purity quartz is gaining increased attention as semiconductor manufacturers seek reliable materials for wafer processing equipment. Recent industry reporting has highlighted progress in qualifying domestically produced quartz materials for 300 mm DRAM manufacturing, underscoring the growing importance of material quality and supply-chain diversification in advanced semiconductor production.

According to a September 14, 2026, report from TrendForce, Jiangsu Pacific Quartz stated that quartz products manufactured from its own high-purity quartz sand had passed qualification at a major Chinese DRAM manufacturer for use in 300 mm wafer production. The development represents progress in the localization of selected semiconductor materials, although it does not mean that all high-purity quartz applications have achieved domestic supply independence.

High-Purity Quartz for Critical Wafer Processing Equipment

Quartz glass is widely used in selected semiconductor manufacturing processes because of its low thermal expansion, high-temperature capability, and chemical stability under suitable operating conditions.

Typical quartz components include furnace tubes, wafer boats, quartz plates, process liners, and other custom-fabricated parts. These components may be used in diffusion, oxidation, low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), annealing, and related thermal processing systems.

As wafer fabrication processes become more demanding, quartz components must satisfy increasingly specific requirements for material purity, dimensional consistency, and surface quality. Trace metallic impurities can be particularly important because contamination introduced during high-temperature processing may affect wafer properties and device yield.

For this reason, semiconductor-grade quartz selection requires more than checking the nominal silicon dioxide content. Buyers may also need to consider individual impurity levels, material homogeneity, bubble content, surface condition, and process compatibility.

Why 300 mm Wafer Processing Raises the Bar

The transition toward larger wafer formats places additional demands on equipment design and process consistency. Quartz components must fit the equipment accurately while maintaining suitable performance under repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Dimensional deviations, surface defects, or unsuitable material properties can create maintenance challenges and increase qualification risks. For critical applications, manufacturers therefore need controlled fabrication processes and inspection procedures that can demonstrate compliance with customer specifications.

Qualification is also an important part of the supply process. A quartz component that meets a dimensional drawing may still require further evaluation under actual process conditions before it can be approved for production use.

Supply-Chain Diversification and Remaining Challenges

Recent qualification progress highlights the importance of developing additional sources for semiconductor-grade quartz components. A broader supplier base may offer equipment manufacturers more flexibility in procurement, production planning, and risk management.

However, quartz components used inside semiconductor processing equipment should be distinguished from the ultra-high-purity quartz crucibles used to grow silicon ingots. These products serve different functions and can have substantially different purity and contamination-control requirements.

The distinction is important when evaluating the maturity of a supplier or the progress of material localization.

Outlook for Semiconductor Quartz Products

As semiconductor manufacturing continues to expand, high-purity quartz will remain an important supporting material for selected wafer fabrication processes. Manufacturers capable of combining stable material quality, precision machining, reliable inspection, and traceable production processes will be better positioned to meet demanding customer specifications.

For semiconductor equipment manufacturers and materials buyers, the key consideration is not simply whether quartz is available, but whether the material and finished component can consistently meet the requirements of the intended process.
